Remember Yourself

I have been a stay at home mom for almost 2 years now. At first I thought wow this is so great! No work and I get to watch my children grow up every second of the day! Being with my children has opened my eyes in many ways. I now know how hard it can be just to get your toddler to stay dressed for the entire day, or how long a baby can truly cry just because. At first I felt relieved to be away from the workforce and the everyday bustle of traffic. I relished in the fact that I could walk around in my pj's all day and I began to enjoy the daily lineup of cartoons. Then one day that all too familiar feeling hit me, I did not want to get out of bed or get dressed, I no longer felt I needed to clean the house, and that's when I realized I was very depressed. I try to figure out why, I did not have the daily responsibility of work, I was with my children all day and I did not have to face people if I did not feel like it. That's when I knew I needed some adult time, friends and some time away from the kids. I had not been out with friends since my daughter had been born and she was now 15 months old! How could I forget myself but be so keen to handling all of my children and husbands needs? I knew I wanted to continue to stay at home but I also knew I needed to remember my needs as well. Now I allow myself to work on my website as my children play in controlled environments near me. I go out and have a day just for me, usually getting my hair done or shopping for clothes. I spend time with friends and get involved by volunteering. I am writing this because I know being a mom can be the hardest job in the world and I know lots of you moms forget yourselves, or even feel guilty for thinking of yourselves. It's ok to pamper yourself often. You deserve it and better yet its good for you. Try to remember your needs as well as your family's needs. In the long run you will be much happier, and when you are happy the family is happy.
